Look Up Look Down

Look Up Look Down

Our world
Is warming.
A greenhouse
Is forming.
Toxins around
Are swarming;
Unseen clouds
Of warning.

Look up, look down,
Into clear poison.
Breathe in, breathe out,
Feeling foreboding.
One seed, one ground,
Our only fortune.
Yet we roll it down,
Without any caution.

We track across
Every landscape.
Taking what we want,
Everything is changed.
Mire from a fount.
Earth into moonscape.
We want it all now,
The future can wait.

Look up, look down,
We can't see our handmarks.
Breathe in, breathe out,
We can't feel a backblast.
Wheels spin round,
Catastrophe's forecast.
There's no warning sound
That we won't go past.

Until we must account
We rocket on our way
And bury our doubt
In figures and in faith.
We remind ourselves
We've always found a way,
But there's never been
So much at stake.

Look up, look down,
Gather in the bounty.
Breathe in, breathe out,
No time for accounting.
We want more and faster
So we speed our ploughing.
Making ruts deeper.
And rubble into mountains.

It's still, it's quiet,
I write out my concern.
My mind is in its orbit,
Unsure what we're unearthed.
It summons up its senses,
They gather round
And pour into a vessel
Hope, faith and doubt.

So many intentions,
So much to surmount.
Spokes of invention
Keep wheels spinning round.
From a centre
We look up and look down
To the edges
We breathe in and breathe out.
