Exile 1969

Story Behind The Song

I remember one spring day I came home from school. In the living room my father was pulling apart our bookshelves. Out of the shelving he constructed a large container. Over the coming weeks quilts, clothes, books, documents, crystal glassware, saucepans, cutlery, and a heavy meat mincer, were packed into this wooden contraption. On 27 August 1969 we departed from the Gdanski Train Station in Warsaw ...stateless... with a wooden box that carried our belongings into the unknown future.
