Mucus Membrane was formed in '96 by Tom Persons (ex-Pessimist, ex-Psypheria) and Vinnie Matthews (Dying Fetus) as a side project to provide an outlet for their most brutal musical tendencies. The "Shallow Existence" MCD was released on Wild Rags in '97. At this point Tom moved to San Jose, Ca and joined Psypheria.

The band reformed and released the 4 song demo CD in '01 entitled "Defile the Weak." M.M. went into hiatus as Tom relocated to Sacramento, Ca. By '03, Tom had begun recording the Shades Below CD in his home studio.

After finishing the CD in '04, it was shopped around to labels before receiving interest from Hammermill Records. In '05, Tom reformed M.M. with the line-up of vocalist Josh Ditri, drummer Joe Lopresti, and bassist Jon Borrmann. The band is working on new and current material in order to hit the live circuit by fall '05.
