“I had this romantic idea of moving to San Francisco, starting a band, and doing something fresh”, explains Porro on his project’s beginnings. After limited success putting together a stable band Porro opted to work with musicians as they were available. “I pretty much had a revolving door with other musicians. I’d meet a cool trumpet player, record with him, and then he’d move to NYC next month.” Fast forward two years, two drummers, two trumpet players, two bassist, one cellist, and one producer later and Porro has finished his first full length album, Lampreys and Gigolos.

The music is modern melodic songwriting off the beaten path of mainstream pop and rock with themes ranging from life in San Francisco to childhood demons to Lamprey (a parasitic jawless fish). Porro’s music draws comparisons to: Beck, Elliot Smith, Pete York, David Gray, Rufus Wainwright, Radiohead, Michael Penn, Ben Folds, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, the Beatles, John Lennon, Folk Implosion, Sebadoh, Lou Barlow, and Harry Nilsson.

In 1997 Porro was guitarist and primary writer for Plus, Tucson’s up and coming post modern rock band (runner up “best up and coming band” 1997 Tucson Area Music Awards). The Band recorded three demos, opened for national touring acts Fat and Citizen King and played dates in Tucson and Phoenix. In 1998 Porro was brought onboard Annie Hawking’s Band (1998 Tucson Area Music Awards winner for pop) as a second guitar to help faithfully reproduce the sound of Annie’s 3rd full length CD (Sex Master). Several live dates were played with the new lineup including the annual Tucson Club Crawl Festival and various dates in Phoenix and Flagstaff. After plans for a 1999 Southwest U.S. summer tour were cancelled Porro moved to San Francisco.
