Formed in New Jersey in 2003 by Ko, C.J., Otto, and P.S.R., Brokensoul are a turbulent metal band with progressive insight, alternative temperament, and gothic afflictions. A deep onslaught of 7-string guitar rhythms, depraved solos, bastardized time signatures, and macabre lyrics are the group’s specialty. The songs reflect on the lascivious side of human nature. Obsession, addiction, betrayal, and revenge are pervasive topics that are delivered with the wanton anguish of a repentant sinner.
Ko brings his progressive metal influences to the caldron having previously worked with rock monsters like Rod Morgenstein, Jordan Rudess, and Dream Theater as a technical advisor/engineer. Kosaku also has engineer credits on Liquid Tension Experiment’s 2 CD’s that feature Tony Levin with members of Dream Theater. Ko is a guitar player who is not afraid to experiment and take risks. Always pushing for the emotion his unconventional solos bite and twist the listener’s perception. Ko’s cranks out die cast guitar rhythms that blister and burn on every track.
As a trained musician with a degree in music C.J. raises the band to another level of mayhem. Able to play virtually any time signature thrown at him he allows the group to explore new musical territory that would otherwise be out of reach. His combination of power, technical accuracy and rhythmic chaos adds a turbulent level of aggression to every song.
Hammering out the low frequencies, Otto provides grimy, obsidian bass with blatant hostility. Otto, worked on a number of musical projects with Ko before the formation of Brokensoul. Originally a guitar player Otto found himself drawn to the darker, fuller tone of the bass. As a bass player Otto strives for thunderous sound slaved to compelling melody.
P.S.R’s deep roots in New Jerseys Goth/Industrial metal scene add a darker element to this pyre. P.S.R. previously played bass, guitar, and keys for well known local bands like Empire Hideous, Otto’s Daughter, and Ghost Orgy. He also released an all-electronic CD titled “Sonoluminescence" which he wrote, produced and recorded under the pseudonym Reprobus. The CD met with excellent reviews online and received collage radio airplay. P.S.R’s resonant vocal tone, multifarious presentation, and depraved lyrics bring a final layer of delirium to the mix.
Brokensoul recently completed work on their self titled EP available for free download on their website (www.brokensoul.com). The 3 songs titled “Perhaps a lie”, “Messiah Complex”, and “Deep Down”, are furious, divergent, and authentically metal in every aspect.
