Combining the pop/rock sensibilities of artists such as Big Star and the replacements with the country heart of acts like Willie Nelson and Buck Owens, Wayne Supergenius formed in October of 1999 out of the ashes of alt.rock fav's Cole. and the Polins. Cole., having played with Fuel, Live, Spacehog, and Del Amitri to name a few, was well on their way to becoming the next central PA signing. And then the infamous hand of fate took hold. After the demise of Cole. lead singer/songwriter Tony Ryder generated a small buzz among some label folks with an 11 song acoustic demo that spawned the birth of Wayne Supergenius. Ryder needed a band and set about to find one. It didn’t take long. Turning to his former Cole. mate Mike Passariello for bass duties and then to Tony Melchiorre for drumming. John Fritchey was then roped into the fold where his services as guitar player, songwriter and studio mastermind have been invaluable.
Collectively drawing on influences such as the Eagles, Burt Bacharach, the Beatles and Stones, Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne and George Jones, the 4 went to Stress Free studios armed with a brand of country tinged rock with pop smarts that they coined, “alt.pop.” (Not quite pop/rock, not quite alt.country).
