When I was a kid, all I ever really wanted to do was ride on a flying saucer. I liked to draw pictures and later on I took up playing and singing folk music. That was back in the early '60s. I seemed drawn to the more obscure and obtuse music of the hills, the Carter Family, Roy Acuff, Doc Watson, to name a few. Then I discovered Ledbelly, blew my mind.
I left Hawaii in '64, for New York City, gonna be a folk singer. But New York was full of folk singers all starving to death. I couldn't write a song to save my life, so I became an artist. I wrote and illustrated a bunch of Children's Books, still do. Love it. About ten years ago I started writing songs out of the blue. I play them and record them. Love it.
Still waiting for a ride on that flying saucer, though.
