About Marty

Where I come from

I was born in New York City to parents that were both professional writers. Dad was a newspaper/magazine editor, columnist and published novelist. Mom was a public relations/technical writer. They both were already successful in their chosen careers long before I was born. Highly intelligent and well experienced from coming up in the Great Depression and WWII I couldn't have been more fortunate in hindsight for parents with these skill levels and accomplishments. Although my career(s) took a slightly different direction (music instead of writing) the knowledge, insights and disciplines they enforced and taught me growing up have served me very well. Even when I was not even aware of using their teaching I was and the results were magnificent for me. Mostly personally but also professionally.
I started out playing drums at age 14 and got good quick. At 16 I began going to coffee houses (yes they did exist) singing and playing guitar on street corners in Georgetown Washington DC. Darn if I didn't start earning money and the journey was on.

Along the way from there I've always made every effort to find better musicians than me so I could learn to play better. I developed my harmonica styles to a top level and started working for bands as a hired gun doing vocals, harmonies, harmonica, rhythm guitar and percussion. It became my mainstay career for the next 25 years. Things progressed; I worked with more and better musicians, and so on.
Some of the musicians and bands I've had the good fortune to work with are:
Kenny Neal
Iko Iko
Nicole Yarling
David Cooler Band
Albert Castiglia
War
Evens Colas...and many others.
I've always preferred to work as a "Hired Gun." Fame was not the major goal in my career. However, I was a "Successful" musician in that I always had viable work going on and steady income. To me that was much more fun than the grind of a touring band, always forced to be "On Spotlight" even when going to the bathroom. Session players really do have the best gig in music no matter what.
Around the year 1999 I met Evens Colas who took me under wing and showed me exactly why I had not been able to move up in the ladder of professionalism in music. I eventually built my own Home Recording Studio using Roland Equipment.
I had to sell off the studio 2 years ago due to separation/divorce issues and am now finally beginning to rebuild everything essentially from scratch. So if you're looking for the next BIG NAME from me look somewhere else. I'd rather do all this right...! instead of selling my (fill in the blanks) for fifteen minutes of fame. Hope you like the music I post, and of course buy it (lol) and we'll see you all on the inside?
Peace!
