The Short Story

Gene began his musical career in the late 1950s as a (very) young folksinger in Boston and went on to play in rock bands through high-school and college in the 60s and 70s. Then, a sense of practicality and an interest in science led him to medicine, and he gave up music for most of medical school and surgical training. After a several decade hiatus for a career in academic surgery at the University of Washington, Gene is returning to his musical roots as a singer/songwriter.

“The inspiration for my songwriting comes from both the medical and personal sides of life. I am constantly amazed by patients who, in moments of pain, uncertainty, and fear, somehow find hidden currents of courage to lift them up. The doctor is traditionally regarded as the source of strength in the doctor-patient relationship, but I think the reverse can also be true. On the personal side, just being a parent, step-parent, husband (and ex-husband) is a deep well of material. Sometimes it takes a song to sort the details out or say something that can’t be expressed any other way. “

Gene’s first studio CD - One Good Day - contains 7 original and 3 unique cover songs, written and produced in a style reminiscent of James Taylor and acoustic Paul Simon.
