Bio

Ever since I first began creating my own electronic music in 1980, I have always wondered if my musical tools have souls of their own. They seem to help me shape the sounds almost intuitively, if they are good tools. These days, software synthesizers are rapidly replacing the standalone synths I have grown accustomed to. I never felt that the technology would get behind me, but I feel much more comfortable thinking of a real keyboard instrument as just that - an instrument. I can see it, feel it, twiddle its knobs, what-have-you. Software synths, living in a virtual studio in my computer just don't seem real to me... yet.

This obsession with electronic music began with the appearance of Gary Numan on Saturday Night Live back in 1980. I was a student of Suzuki Piano at the time, and at the ripe old age of 12 I had grown a bit bored with it. When I heard the sounds coming out of Numan's keyboard instruments, I knew I had to do the same thing. Gary's music has remained an inspiration to me right through the present moment, as well as the other three legs of my musical table, DEVO, Yello and Nine Inch Nails.

Mum and Dad bought me a very basic Casio "synth" of sorts, which I all but rebuilt to try and get the sounds I was looking for.  The inevitable summer jobs followed, and soon a Korg Poly-61 joined my "studio". A Korg DW6000
