Song Description

This is a lounge jazz song, with trumpet, trombone, clarinet, flute, saxophone, piano, vibes, acoustic bass, drums, and the voice of the very talented Amy Harvey. The tempo is 116 BPM in the key of D minor.

Story Behind the Song

I first began this song several years ago while I was in the shower. A bass line came into my head and it sounded sophisticated and suave, or "dapper." Who else but James Bond? The rest fell into place. Eventually, I found the right voice to sing it. I am very happy and honored to have Amy Harvey put her singing talent into this work.

Lyrics

Dapper
© 2016, John Gerard Macchietto

Verse 1: He walks into a crowded room straight-faced
Has no sweat and every hair's in place
Silken shirt and cufflinks match his tie
Fedora hat tilted downwards towards his eyes --
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
What makes this gentleman so dapper?

Verse 2: Ladies struggle hard to hide their glances
Idle conversations spark romances
People ask him what he really thinks
He just sends a smile and adds a wink --
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
(Instrumental)

Verse 3: He doesn't say a word or shout a sound
His whispers though are the loudest words around
He knows he's most distinguished in his class
Confident rapport as smooth as glass --
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
What makes this gentleman so dapper?

Verse 4: People always see him as first-rate
The kind of gentleman to emulate
Distinguished tastes are never unforesaken
Martinis always stirred and never shaken --
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
What makes this gentleman so dapper?
What makes this gentleman ----- so dapper?
