Story Behind The Song
I think all thinking human beings ask themselves the same questions about existence. And I think we all answer these questions differently depending on our stage and situation in life. when I wrote this song, this is how I answered the great big question.
Song Description
Although at the core of this song is a man who has determined that (maybe) life has no more meaning than does the moment in which you're living, it's not necessarily a sad song. It's more a song of acceptance and resolution. If the "reason for swimming" (ie: living) is to try not to sink... well, then he's just going to try not to sink.

Lyrics
I took a step out my front door
And I took a look around
It was a different view than I knew
With a hundred different sounds
I took a step off the cliff edge
And I kinda liked the fall
If you don't hit then you missed it
But I don't miss much at all
We're all looking for a meaning
Maybe it's less than we think
Maybe the Reason for Swimming
Is to try not to sink
She wakes me when I'm sleepin'
And I don't know what to think
She picks me up when I'm broken
And I don't know what to think
She gets made in the evening
When I've had to much to drink
In the mornin' I can't blame her
Though I don't recall a thing
We're all looking for a meaning
Maybe it's less than we think
Maybe the Reason for Swimming
Is to try not to sink
I'm just trying not to sink
I'm just trying not to sink
I'm just trying not to sink
I'm just trying not to sink
