Story Behind The Song
When some friends broke up the guy took it really hard and it was difficult for him to see how anyone else could fit into the hole she had left, hence the line 'fit for only one lover' (or 'woman' as it was then).
I've since made the song more generalised so (with changes to pronouns) it could be sung by a man or a woman. I've also changed the perspective to someone looking in and realising they are falling in love with the person who's been hurt.
Song Description
Your're watching a friend's relationship break up. He/she thinks they'll never be suited to anyone else having put their heart and soul into the relationship only to end up hurt. You watch the despair, anger and eventual coming to terms with the end of the relationship only to realise that you might be the one to help him/her get over it.

Lyrics
Over time she's changed and it's he who's achieved it
Fashioned the girl she is now
With his sculptor's hands he moulded and kneaded
The one he could not live without
Yes he's got the woman he wanted
But now he's moved on - wants to make a new one
She's fit for only one lover
And that lover is gone
She was happy to be made to fit in his story
Secure as she thought in their love
She was fired in his flames and glazed in his glory
Forever to fit hand in glove
But he's not the one that she dreamed of
Her loving investment has yielded no score
She's fit for only one lover
And that lover's no more
She clutches at straws and searches for comfort
In friends that they knew all along
She can't understand why they still want to know him
Isn't it her who's been wronged?
Now she's hot tempered and she's cold hearted
No combination you'd want to be near
Now she's fit for only one lover
And that lover's not here
She can't comprehend that there might be another
Who sees her the way that he did
Who has stood on the sidelines and watched her recover
The person she was before him
Now she's what you might call standoffish
But she'll open up eventually
'Cos she's fit for only one lover
And that lover is me
