Flowers Near Apollo

Story Behind The Song

To put it quite bluntly, this song is about a crack whore that I used see walking around my neighborhood. She was heroin-skinny, and she really did wear a crooked wig. I saw her one-day, and I started thinking about what took place in her past to make her life turn out like it did, and what would someone who grew up with her have to say about her current lifestyle. I decided I would be that person, and I would have an ?end of life? conversation with her. The Apollo reference is from something that sticks in my head from when I was a child - watching the Apollo 11 lunar module take off from the moon?s surface. I watched as the bottom part of the landing module was left sitting on the moon, thinking, ?that must be the loneliest place on earth?. Yeah, I know it was the moon not the earth, but hey I was just a little kid. Regardless, it was a damn lonely place, and for some strange reason (during the course of writing these lyrics) I imagined this woman up there on the moon, planting flowers all around that old hunk of metal. Speaking of end of life - I haven't seen her around here for the last a couple of months. Maybe I should buy a telescope... John

Lyrics

flowers near apollo

you talked tough about troubled times
you said they?d never get you down
but here you are you on the street tonight
in the devil's wedding gown
no you?re not getting married
you?re just getting in between
your life a rock and the hardest place
that i have ever seen

i can?t walk on water but i can walk away
and its gonna take a miracle
if you want me to stay here with you
in this room with a view
of your world

angel?s say someday soon
they?re gonna find you up on the moon
planting flowers near apollo
hoping all your friends will follow
you there

you got a crooked wig and a cigarette
that someone gave to you
they almost make you look alive
like some dead people do
no you?re not getting older
you?re not getting anywhere
just now i looked into your eyes
and i didn?t see you there

angel?s say someday soon
they?re gonna find you up on the moon
planting flowers near apollo
hoping all your friends will follow
you there

every boulevard is a broken dream
every broken dream is a sin
every dollar is a needle
that you thread under your skin
do you know what life is for
do you think that there is more
in the end

angel?s say someday soon
they?re gonna find you up on the moon
painting flowers on apollo
hoping all your friends will follow
you there
