Story Behind The Song

My father side of the family were farmers in Nebraska, and I wrote this for them. Many farmers have lost their farms for different reasons. Many of them were very angry at the reasons that cost them the farm. This is a story about a farmer who has lost everything but was ok with it. He was just happy that he got the chance to walk in his dads shoes and got to live his daddy's dream.

I picked him up on the highway
He said howdy and he shook my hand
I ask him where he was going
He said I've got to see this land
Heading west he told a story
Of sixty years working the land
And how he raised his family
And all the love he'd had

His voice cracked as he talked
About his wife passing on
The day the bank took his farm
And the last six years alone
Then he just sat there quiet
He wiped a tear from his eye
Then he said I'd do it all again
And friend let me tell you why

As he grabbed his suitcase

Farming was my legacy
but that way of life is dead

but my children have their health
they've made their own way
my wife is waiting for me

I may not know where I'm going
But I remember where I've been
