Harvest Moon

Story Behind The Song

In writing songs, sometimes they take you where they want to go rather than where you had intended. This song had a mind of it's own. I had the intention of writing a song that reflected growing up on a farm in the South decades ago. Harvest Moon kept pulling me back further in time - and then further yet. Eventually, it placed me in pre-Civil War days with a portrait of the oppressed and the hope and faith that can endure. I humbly submit that I have neither the experience or the depth of understanding to fathom the lives of those who were enslaved, but my admiration for their will to survive and their faith in freedom is immeasurable.

Song Description

The deep abiding hope of freedom under the most severe oppression on a pre-Civil War Deep South plantation.

Lyrics

Harvest moon
These weary arms wait your light
shine tonight

Gentle breeze
Come cool this brow with your touch
Won't you please

Raise your voices on high
There's a land far beyond
far far beyond

Take peace and rest
Come lay your head
Time knows where we are
Where we are

Someway there's a promise that calls me
Somewhere a voice that I hear
Down a golden road I will follow
Someday when the light shines so clear

Hope will abide
Freedom lift my soul high

In the dawning grey
hold my hand and believe

Someway there's a promise that calls me
Somewhere a voice that I hear
Down a golden road we will follow
Someday when the light shines so clear
