High in the Hills

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song after I moved from a small town in Illinois to Chicago in 1977. I was in awe but also shocked by the behaviors and fast pace of life in the city. I took a trip out west in 1978 with two friends and wrote this song while we camped in Yellowstone National Park - High in the Hills...up where Heaven's so near.

High in the Hills

Verse 1
The sky around the city is always hazy
Breathing city air can make you crazy
You're screaming at yourself
It's time to head on out to the country

Verse 2
When life get's too confusing, your mind goes reeling
Time goes flashing by, thoughts go stealing
To a place up in the hills
Where you can put your troubles behind you

Chorus
I want to be high in the hills, far away from it all
Sipping on moonshine underneath a waterfall
Where the air smells of pine trees
Sun shines so clear
High in the hills, so far away from here

Instrumental Break

Verse 3
People in the city are always running late
Seems like everywhere you go, have to hurry up and wait
I can't take it any more
I want to lose myself in the forest

Verse 4
You ever get the feeling like your soul's on fire
Nothing you can score, gonna get you any higher
I know something you can do
To put you up in the ozone

Chorus
I want to be high in the hills, far away from it all
Sipping on moonshine underneath a waterfall
Where the air smells of pine trees
Sun shines so clear
High in the hills, so far away from here
High in the hills, up where heaven's so near
