Song Description

bluesy, Bonnie-Raitt style song about what it was like, what happened, and what it's like now

Story Behind the Song

This song chronicles the life I've lived. By all rights, I shouldn't be here today - but God must have plans for me, because I'm still here! I tell my story in hopes that others might hear the hope and joy that can be theirs if they just surrender.

Lyrics

VERSE 1
I was born with a hole in my heart
a little wider than the deep blue sea
I didn?t care about anyone else
unless they could do something for me
I didn?t know what reality was, I existed in my own fantasy
Just a selfish, egotistical brat was all I knew how to be
I was so full of pain and fear, there was no room for anything more
Like livin? in a prison cell with no hope of getting out the door

CHORUS
On this Road of Recovery, He has made my life complete
On this Way of Discovery,
I have learned that surrender does not mean defeat
Gonna live by the Father?s hand, ?cuz He died to set me free
If God is for me, who can be against me?
As I travel this Road of Recovery

VERSE 2
The void grew bigger as the years went on -
it just about swallowed me whole
My heart was blacker than the dead of night,
I can?t say much for the state of my soul
I turned to drink, I turned to drugs and money that glittered like gold
Anything to stop my heart from thinkin?
that my way of life was leaving me cold
But every time I tried to fill up my life
With something other than the Father above,
I found myself lyin? and cheatin? and stealin? and callin? it love!

CHORUS

VERSE 3
Things finally came to a head one day, and I started to cry
There was no way out for me, and I just wanted to die
I took paper and pen and I wrote my family goodbye
For the first time in my life, I?d forgotten how to lie
I realized I had thrown away so many opportunities
I wished that I could go back in time
and turn my life around 180 degrees!

BRIDGE
From somewhere deep down in my soul
I heard a voice like a ringin? bell
It brought a breath of clean, fresh air to my cold, dark prison cell
It was Jesus - and He said, ?Child, I?ve come to make you well.
My Father sent Me to rescue you from the very depths of Hell!?

VERSE 4
So I quit drinkin? and I started thinkin? ?bout the life I had left behind
A husband, a child, a family
who had always been so loving and kind
I had to turn my perception around
and look at things from a new point of view
Instead of sayin?, ?Get outta my way!?
I think ?What would the Master do??
And every day I try to live my life
the way that He would have me be
Since the Lord?s come into my heart,
I can be happy, joyous and free!
