Paper Burns (Hippie-Country)

Song Description

"Taxi To Tonganoxie", is the only CD of Chet Nichols' music that features full back-up bands in the studio. The material on this CD was recorded, engineered and co-produced by Stephen Barncard in two different studios back in the early and mid 1970's. The songs, "Paper Burns" and "You Were They And They Were You" were recorded at Wally Heider's studio in San Francisco. The other tunes were recorded at Stephen Barncard's home in the hills above Beverly Glen in Los Angeles. The back-up band at the Beverly Glen location consisted of a fabulous group of artists: Laura Allan (Laura Allen)- vocals, Fuzzy Oxendine - drums (Sons, Grape, Jerry Miller Band, etc), Wayne Goodwyn on Fiddle, lap steel (Emmylou), Ricky Wallace, Estrella Berosini - vocals and Billy Berosini - bass (Jackson Browne, Brewer & Shipley). Chet played acoustic guitar, dulcimer, electric guitar and piano. Even Stephen got in on the act and made an appearance playing bass! The Heider sessions consisted of Buddy Cage - pedal steel guitar (New Riders of The Purple Sage), Pete Sears - bass (New Riders Of The Purple Sage, Jefferson Starship) and Spenser Dryden - drums (The Airplane, The New Riders Of The Purple Sage). Even though this collection of tunes is almost 35 years old, people are still discovering it, enjoying it and sharing it.

Verse 1.
You say you love me, you say you care
But, all you do is shake your head and say is cut your hair
Now, I'm just a young man
No, and not as wise are you
But, I do know a few things to be true
You'll never get anywhere if you criticize
You'll wind up bellies-up, in the pool of your own lies
Now, I can see by your eyes, you think I'm a fool
But, I've been to school and I've learned ...

Chorus
Paper burns
Pretty paper burns
Dirty paper burns

Verse 2.
The Last Whole Earth Catalogue is right here in my hands
I'm gonna build myself a dome and buy myself some land
This seems to be the dream of many a young man
Seems it may have something to say about making a stand
But remember....

Chorus

nice country ditty like the theme and content

Better than a cup of coffee. Great energy in this performance. The harmonies were spot on - getting it this tight took some real effort. I liked the slowed down melody in the chorus it gave the ear a break and allows the chorus to stick in the brain. Overall you have a winning style here it was a pleasure to listen.

KEEP GRINDING THE HIT WILL COME

Love the guitar parts. Very positive-sounding.
Sorry (and it may be my old ears) but I cannot make out the second word in your title. Paper ? This may be due to the recording when the second vocal part comes in - it could be getting muddied up a bit.
Love the 'I've been to school' lyric. Very coool way into the chorus and the music at that point enhances it really well.

I loved the fun Honky tonk country sound. It had a fun upbeat vibe. Lots of fun.

The song has a sort of Crosby Stills feel to it with fine vocals and musicianship throughout. Very good steel guitar as well as other good guitar tracks going on throughout.

I like the vocals and the harmonies. The instruments are very good. I like the steel guitar in the background. The tempo is really nice. The mix is very good. The arrangement is good also. I like it.

Especially love the vocal harmonies on this great track. Well written and performed.

Great intro and very energetic vocals. This song makes you want to get up and move your butt. Fantastic musicians and well preformed and who ever did the mix should be commended. Great song and lots of fun. Loved it a lot.

This was a fun song, you had a really good feel in the folk, country style. The instruments were spot on for the genre
