Something Familiar

Story Behind The Song

Everything started at a funeral where the original idea of the composition's leitmotiv emerged from the depths of my mind. Then over the next 8 years the concept grow into the final composition about nature and it's ever repeating cycles.

Song Description

The short introduction ends with an open note which opens some room for the setting. Imagine a forest on a rainy and foggy day.Two ostinato notes by the harp lay the fundaments upon which we are led by the celesta to the first theme. The piano doubles the harp in a higher register and adds a layer of mystery. Now the piano introduces the main theme. The notes are asking us if we are aware that we are all part of a big natural cycle. Two heavy chords by the brass section warn us not to forget that every cycle has both a starting as well as an ending point. They lead us again to the main theme. Executed by the strings, the main theme blossoms:This time it wants us to focus on the current moment. Here and now, we are in the midst of our lifecycle. Now the woodwinds are taking over. They introduce the theme of beauty and endless possibilities which every cycle holds for us. In this sequence the oboe whispers a sweet, yet melancholic, melody. The urgency is remarked by the strings, while the piano adds again the mystery element with a variation of the very first movement. The perception here is one of a beautiful moment giving in to the inevitable epilogue. After the breakdown, we are taken back to the main theme to a sort of new beginning. After the end of one cycle, something new is preparing to burst into life. A piano arpeggio is repeating itself, while the strings build up speed towards this new scenery. A new cycle opens up in front of us in the form of a second main theme on the piano. The woodwinds are doubling the melody to add importance, while the brass section highlights the magnificence of this new beginning. The strings deliver an answer with a variation of the first main theme in an attempt to tie the parts together and to strengthen the idea of a repeating cycle. In the two following repetitions the second main theme becomes independent and the brass section highlights its growth. Next up is a part dedicated to reflection: a glimpse into the past, at actions

Emotionally very strong. You have a very good handle on your sampling production. I really liked the very subtle high register keys on the right side. Nice change at 2:31. Good composition length. Very nice effort!
