Hello everyone, I removed Phunk Drops from my song list, because everyone that submits a review for this track expects it to be longer and it was created to be a very short snip-it for a commercial. Sorry I had to Drop that Phunk on ya!

This is one of those reviews where you are probably not going to like what I have to say, but I will say it anyway. There are some strong points in the song, but it needs work. The tone of the singer is excellent, good pitch for the most part, except in a few spots. With that said, the melody is very monotone and definitely needs some work. Although, the melody is weak, the passion of the singer is definitely obvious and I do believe with the right coaching, there is great potential in the near future. He has a rich voice and simply needs to stretch outside his comfort zone. I love the little vocal twang at 23 seconds, 2:42 and throughout. Also, the baritone slides into the notes are very cool as well. A good producer will emphasize and make these shine.....Although the mix needs work, the recording was excellent and very well done. Especially the recording of the vocal.

Lyrically, the song is not there. The opening line is weak..."I woke up this morning, sun shining so bright". Find a different way to say this as this line is so overused. To be honest, most publishers would probably not listen much further. Just about every country hit tells a story and every word in the song means something. Unless you have a vocal or a melody that is stellar, this opening line is almost impossible to make work because of the overuse. There are many phrases in this song that have similar challenges where the rhymes are obvious and overused.

I like the talkback on the chorus, however the pitch gets lost, especially at 1:22 and other points in the song. Needs to be corrected and I would probably make this 3 or 4 part harmony if I left it in. Although I like the talkback in the chorus, it probably won't work in today's country market because of the lyrical content. The listener needs to be humming the chorus when the song is over and that isn't happening here. With a more evolving lyric and a stickier melody, it might work.

Drum programming is killing the production. In today's market, even demos should have a something other than a snare landing on 2 and 4 throughout the whole song. This needs to have a lot more time put into it as this is dynamically frail.....Ending is abrupt and cuts out.....The arrangement needs a lot of work. It sounds as if a drum machine was turned on, a couple of tracks were added and then a vocal was cut. More effort is expected, unless it's an obvious hit.

If I was producing, I would experiment with slowing this down and have the singer work only with an acoustic guitar until his vocal owns this song. With more evolved lyrics, better story telling and a stronger chorus, this song and singer could shine. Then maybe speed it back up before recording it.

With all that said, I think there is something for this vocalist. If I was producing, I would connect this singer with excellent country songwriters and work up a song that demonstrates what this person can do. The singer has great tone and with a producer who has been around the block, he will shine.

I would recommend that the songwriter listen to Josh Turner, Jason Aldean, Eric Church, Dierks Bentley and the other young male country stars. It is clear that the songwriter needs a better understanding of today's country marketplace and what consumers are buying.

To summarize, the singer is much better than the song and production. The recording is good, but the arrangement and instrumentation is weak. More time needs to be put into this song.

I hope this helps.....Roy

Dang Roy I really needed that, hahaha, thanks a bunch and I will follow your lead on this, and I will work harder. When I was sing ing the lead vocal it felt right but when i started singing the back ground vocal at a higher pitch, I had a real bad cough than, not making any excuses, but i wrote all the music and did all the back ground vocals and, wrote the sucky lyrics, But iw ill go back to the drawing board and it all over again. I have one more song for you to listen to its called Drunk love, tell me what you think when you get time. I hope you get achance to listen to it soon because I'm about to get deployed for 6months to Afghan. Well talk to you later in God Bless you.
