Fantastic! Seems so rare a song gets picked up off BJ or Taxi to be recorded by a signed artist. I had a crack at country but find the format a bit confining - but your song sounds right on the button for todays market.

That's a great one Anthony! I'm hearing Carole King meets Steely Dan. I wanna hear the sistahs coming in behind you, but the vocal stands alone quite well. "watch you watch *me*" is a really nice moment. This is a winner!

Author

Needless to say, that song was a blast to record. The sax player is a big Steely Dan fan, so he was "all-in". Jeff, I have a couple songs down the road where some "sistahs" will be backing me up.

True story: Not long after finishing the song, I played it for my wife. First thing she said when I was done was "Who's Mr. Cool?" That tells you all you need to know about who's NOT Mr. Cool (at least in this household). :)

That's a cool song - a bit of West Coast Steely and RnB horns thrown in and a steamy lyric. Your voice is always impressive - very marketable I'd say

Great to hear your releasing more material. This is a departure from your previous work with a more roots feel. I like as a first release - It sets things up for what's to come - bit like Drive my car does on Rubber soul

It sure does - as they say, it's the process not the outcome that sustains you. I tried country music for a while and enjoy playing pedal steel and resonator guitars etc but the format seems too restrictive lyrically to make headway in. Lately I've been trying RnB where anything goes!

Author

I have tried a number of genres: Country, Pop, Celtic, Jazz, Rock, Sacred, Gospel, Blues. I just like all the music, I guess!

Author
Steve Low

That's a lot of genres! I submit through Taxi.com mainly but can't get one past them yet. It's so hard for me to sound contemporary - the 60s and 70s keep permeating through and wrecking my chances. I enjoy the challenge though.

Author
Clark Ford

Yes, exactly! I gave up on Taxi. Thinking of just sending everything directly to a production music library that is interested. I wrote 6 full-length musicals set in each decade since the 1960s. Some of my music was a deliberate attempt to sound retro. The show set in 2016 was challenging. I have had 2 songs recorded (I paid) from that show: Love Transcends, and You Make Me Happy.

Hey, been listening to a few more of your tracks. I like the sexual innuendo. Aircon and Black Line could be played on any alt radio station and fit right in. Don 't know how one gets on the air. We have an alt station here in Ames IA (college town) but I have never sent them anything, as so far my recordings are not alt. I did notice on Political and the Cafe song that the lyrics don't match the song. No harm in correcting that... Here is my "alt" piece (kind of) in a prelminary recording of just me singing (!) https://soundcloud.com/cfford/im-no t-a-bad-guy

Author
Steve Low

That's a good theme - sounds like the electric Piano off the 'Help' album. I'm not surprised those lyrics don't match - I probably updated the songs for Taxi or Sound cloud and uploaded the recording to BJ without changing the lyrics.

Elijah, Thanks for the nice note. Don't let web sites frighten you. There are a lot of great ones in the world. Find two or three that work for you and stick with them. And if you are not comfortable with the fees, then utilize their free services. Like other sites, there are many things to on Broadjam free of charge. Please take advantage of them, especially connecting with the other writers. We have seen so many good people get connected and create great projects together. That in itself is truly one of the joys of running this website. My best to you and it would be an honor to meet you as well. All the best, Roy

It's all just down to networking probably - the same on Broadjam. The way to work soundcloud is to coment on other peoples tracks, favoirte or follow them. That inspires those artists to look at your work. I've done no networking on Broadjam apart from some song reviews and so my songs hardly get heard. It's quite time consuming to do all that. i just load songs on this site if i want to submit to something. Your work is very high quality and if you were full time with a live band etc you could go a long way. But it's a big call with a job like yours and a family etc. Steve

Hey Nick...Thanks, as always, for the support. I wouldn't have any songs in the Top 10 if not for your backing. It's nice but I don't take it seriously. The real measure of whether or not someone likes your stuff is if they buy it. In that regard, I am batting Zero. I don't know if the world would spin off it's axis, but it may wobble a bit.

Author

Buying it true ... but there are lesser measures like downloading for free or repeated plays. The no.of quality artists allowing free downloads on soundcloud for example is huge. Steve

Author
The Spermatochords

Steve...I recently uploaded a few songs to Soundcloud and they're available for free download. We'll see if anyone does so. However, as you mention, it is a much "lesser" measure. It doesn't help pay for the cost of recording the songs. Glad to see you've also had some time on the Top 10 - well deserved. Anthony

Thanks for that Anthony. I don't think your tracks are downloadable yet on SC - if that was your intention. But to sell downloads I guess it's a matter of getting tons of hits and then people going to your website. It's hard to know how to generate 1000s of hits. The only song of mine that is in the 1000s on SC is called jack Johnson - so it's easy to guess how that works. I hadn't even heard Jack johhnson's music when i wrote that. I just thought what a lucky guy - a pro surfer and musician.

Hello Steve, I came across your music via the tyical rock/pop/alternative search and was very pleasantly surprised to find a fellow traveler on the edges, someone who writes lyrics that don't sound like they were spit out by regurgitating everyone elses cliches. Catchy melodies with lyrics that bite a little. Love "Terror Bone" and Bob Dylan...". I get your sense of humor, even though we are quite far apart geographically. Keep up the good work.....Anthony Monteleone (The Spermatochords).

Thanks for the positive stuff Anthony. I just listened to your truth and Illusion and yes that is a song and production I can totally relate to - so I'll have a trawl through more of your songs. Most of my strong influences have been American. I've loaded all my songs (70) on Soundcloud and there seems to be quite good traffic there. Alot of my productions are a bit rushed but I just love writing and recording - I don't want to spend months recording one song. I just made a MOR CD. So time to head back to the edge. Love the spermatochords name - good thinking! Steve

If you relate to "Truth & Illusion", then you will probably like quite a few of my songs. I agree with your approach. The first 14 songs on my list are on the "Lunatics..." album. It took me about 2 months to record all 14 songs late last year. The remaining songs on my list are from an album back in 2006 ("Love, Lust & Other 4-Letter Words"). They were recorded with a solo acoustic guitar, live (no overdubs; that's why you will hear the occasional flub), primarily for cost reasons (as most of us on broadjam can relate to). As a result, they are more in the folk genre.

Hi Steve, '2nd Coming' may be overstating it a bit :) I never stopped writing, mate, I just walked away from the stage. Have a gazillion new songs though and in some respects feel I have unfinished business. Would quite like to remind Kiwis of who I am and what I do, but I'm not at all sure anyone would care. You may see me travelling past with guitar in hand one day, or not. Anything is possible.

It is a fickle business and the new generations probably don't care about the past but for our generation you definitely have a kind of iconic status and a recognisable brand (trade mark sound) so I would have thought you could trade on your name quite a bit over here. These types of site are great at least for having a chance of getting music heard. I've found sound-cloud good with 4000 hits on 2 sites over 2011.

It's all too hard for me to administrate Steve. I'm so busy with this and that. I have a great many songs but too little time. Plus, to be frank, I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to the internet. It seems every time I'm urged to go to a 'you beaut' music site another handful emerge. It's overwhelming :)
Might return to 'trade' on my name one day. It will be small, unambitious tiru playing old and new songs. Probably just me nd my guitar initially and if there is great interest, I'd up the ante for the second tour. It wont be until 2012 though. concentrating on promoting and marketing a book I've written this year.
