Hi, Stanford. "I Need a Love" is a very good tune with the atmospheric sounds of Simple Minds that I really enjoy. Your thoughtful lyrics wander and search for life's meanings. That's understandable when a beloved companion and pet dies. I had that happen earlier this summer with the loss of our cat, Ulan, and it has been heartbreaking. You were a tech? In what field? I was the geeky graphic designer at the Dept. of Transportation, building computers and writing web pages. It's one of those things where I would have liked to paint, write music, draw cartoons, but life got in the way with having to make a living. Equality has been a theme of my life, too, as in your song, "Promised Land." I enjoyed listening to your songs and seeing the meaning behind them. John
Thanks John. I love Simple Minds, so I'm happy to be compared to them, I find more space in their songs than mine and their production is generally top notch.. but I'm still learning! I am going to rework Promised Land, I think it has some good parts and ideas but at the least the chorus is poor. I feel I've taken another step forward with 'I need a love', especially with the arrangement. I still am a tech: Software developer, so I'm just as happy plugging in a new synth sound as I am rocking my guitar love and as you say a keen hobbyist in this and other more fundamentally 'creative' outlets than the day job. (Including Games dev). Yes, losing my cat, younger than was rightful, was a hard hit. I can see you are also a cat lover! I am still taking time out before taking in another. Not a problem - I hope you enjoy what you hear anyway, and I never get sick of feedback!
One other note, that is just the instrumental edited version of my full-vocal song "What About My Reward" but I stuck it on not so much as a song, as something that a music supervisor might want for a background scene in a film or TV show.
Listened again, I can't get near you're playing but I'm going to be cheeky, I'm not hearing enough bass, there's some nice higher register bass lines but I do want some more bottom end for me and just for me too even loving the guitars I would want some synth or other sounds for my prog rock. But loving the guitar work.

Hi Bob I listened to the Cowboy song and it's great too. I still hear Shania Twain singing the melody and lyric I had in my ear when there was none! You played me all the way, like when my fiddles on fire it doesn't happen everyday. Yeah I don't know where that came from either just the music sounds real fun and saucy to me. All the best

Darn it, forgot to give the marks in my review I've just done and no option to go back and correct. Anyway I enjoyed it, hopefully my comments cover it. My only small critique is on the lyrics which captured me in parts but not quite all over.

Hi Greg, listened again. Initially because it's such a light, feel good piece of music, summer in California. I'm hearing it off the bat as a theme tune type thing for 'like' 90210 or Friends. Then there's the reference to needing schooling, (which I think pops out) and waiting at the gates which leads me subconsciously. So it sounds like a love song about being done over by a girl in your early years, a troublesome early love but now you're over it, rather than a song about destiny dealing you out. Mind you I've been done over by women more than destiny itself so it's probably mine own contextual references in play there!
Hi Ashley. Just wanted to add to my review now I've heard the other version and your own comments. I think you got your money's worth on the other version, the singer is great and the male voice carries lyrics that I found just slightly cheesy in your version. Maybe that's sexist but it's the way I heard it. Hearing your unplugged version then I have that context so yours sounds different. I know what you mean about wanting to make it more dusty and lonesome, the other version doesn't have quite all that but it's more interesting and full sounding to a neutral. It could probably have been a more spare mix there though.
Thank you very much for your in-depth review. If I am learning one thing, art is is truly in the eye of the beholder. I've had people tell me the opposite about my version and others who agree with you. My version was actually a total scratch track, the producer was giving me some free recording time, and we just layed it down, one run. So I agree, there is much that could be done to add some dimension. And the other singer..... he just didn't have his heart in it and a little too honky tonk twang for my taste. I don't even really listen to country! Go figure. And the lyrics, they are actually very personal, and I could see how they could be construed as cheesy, but it's about feeling misplaced, aimless, being locked in cycles of self-sabatoge, a slave to the image we hold of ourselves and the events that shape us. We all want to find love, but some of us have a knack for screwing it up every time. Ha, anyways, I ramble. Cheers, Ash

Hey Stanford, thanks for the nice review of the instrumental "lift" of my song, "Lovers & Friends". Very thorough and pretty much spot on with your perspectives.... it is certainly a 60's tune! Thanks for the notation on the amount of bass. The whole song is due for a re-mix and re-mastering, as this version is about 20 years old. To one of your points, there IS a version of "Lovers & Friends" available to enjoy that does have lyrics. I think you will enjoy it. It has risen to #1 on several music charts in the past. Hi Chet, listened to your version with vocal and it's great you've time warped me back to the Sixties and early Seventies for sure and that's not a bad thing. You've been doing this longer than me but yes I still hear plenty of space for a bit more bass. There's more tools to do that sort of thing than there were back in the day! All the best

I mean that's great, you're clearly on top of the music and could make a living there, but for me with the first one I reviewed, the one I'm hearing something different so I'd encourage you to keep going that way and find your own sound. (With vocals ;)
we are really a three piece indie band writing our own material, with Jill on vocals. This electronic music on Broadjam is a side project we started in January to make instrumental music which we could pitch to tv films etc, once the songs were produced by us we thought some of the tracks were possible chart worthy contenders and do have vocals. We have thought of getting an artist to front the project. We have been blown away by the comments and we put the stuff out for comment on Broadjam to see what the people in the industry thought of it, and we really appreciate your comments and suggestions and we fully agree with you on all you have said, we would consider other people using our music for free if they have an appropriate singer that we approve of as long as we get song writing credit but again we thank you for your time and very gracious comments. Our music the running for several industry projects and we have already successful placement of instrumentals since we started in January....
Hey hey Stanford, thanx for the review of "It Must Be You". I think I wrote this song after a few rum based cocktails. I appreciate the feedback and I will certainly consider your suggestions as the song was never really even mixed or mastered yet. Just a rockabilly that I submitted for a "sultry jazz song". We dumped all the rock guitar tracks to fit the submission criteria. I write in many genres and this was a total experiment. Oh the things we do to make some noise. Aloha from Hawaii-Surf's-up! Hi Stelios I reviewed your Felicidad yesterday. I am just a hobbyist in this sphere. To my untutored ear it sounds like an orchestra and choir in there but I am assuming that can't be the case and it is all samples. I am intrigued then how you are bending the samples to your will. I am not really a musician but something of a technologist so interested in that side of things. Is it all a function of the 'magic' you refer to as 'sound synthesis' ?!
Hi Stanford. Thank you for your review-I really appreciate your nice comments and constructive feedback. The track is indeed original and as far as concerning the orchestra is as you said a sampled one. There are no loop based sounds used in this case, but an orchestra sampled instrument by instrument note by note, dynamic by dynamic, on every possible articulation, such as stacatto, spicatto, etc. This is usually made by experts, working on a software brand of that kind. All these samples are then packed and classified in a sample player. It is there where you do all the arrangement, as well as the tweeking and fine tuning of the performance. The sampler plays back the performance you have composed in the midi editor of the DAW and handles all the sampe intervals and every slight detail you have edited to sound realistic. In a few simplistic words, the midi editor is your score (and in most of them you may chose between score editor and midi editor as well) and the sampler (as a plug in) is your orchestra performing the score. The same goes for the choir, which has been also recorded vowel by vowel etc. Then you type the lyrics in the sample editor, you edit the performance and the sampler sings! Less than 20 years before, this action would require some thousands of dollars to aquire an orchestra and choir in order to perform one's score...now is as easy as mentioned. Yet, a good score have to be a good score by itself and no technoligical means may skip that, or make it more possible. However, some of the samples and vocals used in Felicidad, are recorded by me and I am planning to replace all non lyrical vocals with real ones in the near future. Thank you again for the review!
Thanks for the reply. Yes it's the nuances in the sound that really raise it. I've been playing with the music tech for years just for fun but not to that depth.
