It was! The Sia track you mentioned is very awesome. But it also led to a philosophical debate in my head about whether all DubStep music is to be compared to the mighty Skrillex, and what that means for the growth (or lack thereof) for the entire genre. It's still very new, and one of the cons I hear from music listeners/producers is the lack of diversity. "It all sounds like Skrillex", is a staple discussion on producer forums I frequent, and an opinion a few of my personal friends have expressed. I'd consider that a knock against other DubSteppers and the genre itself. Isn't it ideal to be influenced by the best, while still creating something you can call your own?
Indeed it is. I used Skrillex as an example being he is widely known and a lot of the techniques I was trying to impart to you in the review are very prominent in his recent work. I like a lot of Dubstep artists myself and think Skrillex is kind of a one trick pony. Given... The trick is a backflip off of a skyscraper while sniping an apple off of a nun's head, but still... Same thing over and over again. Skrillex is actually pretty challenged in musical theory... You'll notice most of his work doesn't develop many counter rhythms or leads that evolve past his main melody. Personally... I want more from my music. Its why I chose to share the Sia track with you as a reference to research. There was much more substance there even if the sound design wasn't a raging roughneck bass with insane sequencing. Finding a balance between the industry standard and our own personal visions is often challenging and hard to pull off (especially as an indie.) The trick is keeping the music as approachable as possible while working in your own unique twists as you go. Start with the expected or bare minimum standard of whats leading the top 40 and then expand from there. Once your production skills can reproduce whats popular... You'll find that you'll be able to take your productions far further when it comes to what "you" want to hear instead of what's expected. Just stay true to the market while pushing forward and you'll soon acquire the skills to do much more than you ever imagined. You gotta play ball though... You can't just go out there proclaiming "Its art" and expect publishers to see it the same way you do. They won't... Trust me on this one. Find a balance. Study the leaders in the genre. Go from there... Make as much time observing what they do and mimicking those tricks as you do developing your own. Its the best way to stay balanced and get the best bang out of your productions. The artists proclaimed it was 'art'... but all it really was, was blue paint on a canvass.

Thank you Dianne. I wrote that piece in late September after I met a woman I was very taken with. Our connection ran deep, I felt butterflies for the first time in a while, and in the end I just had to fly her out to the ranch for a week. It was one of the most amazing weeks of my life. The piece in question... Attempted to capture that feeling. There was another as well that was written in much the same light. The girl and I are aren't together due to really complicated circumstances... But my lust for her company is no less real. Sometimes the things that inspire us most are the things we can never have... Thankfully... The music inspired from such things has the potential to go far in todays market. So I've got that:) Regarding the girl... We talk almost every other day, love each other deeply, but for now most conform to the circumstances fate has dealt us. It is what it is. I'm really glad the music spoke to you though. N
I told her if the song gets placed... I would use the money to be closer to her. Lets hope its in the cards right? N

I must agree with all of the above Nathaniel; "Captivated" is beautifully elegant, and plays like an ancient sonata of love and loss. The lady must be very special, and a certain muse for this piece. Yes, I too believe that we are given or presented that which we need to fulfill our lives, in body and spirit, even if for only a little while. Noting is static, all is fluid, and therein lies the beauty and the bain. It's hard to surrender to the universe that which we love and cherish, to slip out of our presence. However, the longing is forever there, and does indeed furnish the creative spirit with its own language of lament. Thank God we have the ability to express that love and loss, through poetry and song. Bless you on your journey.......... PS I've never done FB!

This creates a "mini" Broadjam for local markets and specific genres.
