What direction do you see your future in the music recording business headed? Do you know of any Grammy voting members that you can consult with questions of how to reach your goals? What goals have you set for 2015? Thank you, Nikki Hornsby (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Hornsby 1 )

The direction I'm trying to aim for for 2015 is getting one of my songs licenced to be on a movie or tv show. I'm very new to all this and really don't know which direction i should be headed in, do you have any advice?
Kind Regards,
Kelly

Getting commercial airplay for your songs is a good start towards licensing. I once many years ago went to a Car corporation to license my song for their product and they said "The Rolling Stones" was paid millions for a song to use in their commercials which proves the use of songs familiar to audiences vs. songs that are not recognized. It's a balance of funding required for marketing & non exclusive licensing.
The commercial marketplace (broadcasting & sales) is a good influence over all other songs that are in the billions in numbers presented for licensing worldwide.
It helps to study the legal documents in the regard to all music agreements that you may have to sign knowing what you want in compensation or achievements with the written contractual agreement.
Always get as many written reviews of your song releases online & offline that you can obtain. Scan and make files of these reviews. Radio broadcasters are good to have as reviewers when they broadcast your songs on their shows as well as professional song reviewers in Trade publications as well as websites like Broadjam as they can be quoted. This is like having a resume of references for a job when you submit the songs for future purposes in your goals.
Build a portfolio for performance career as well as original music releases. Disclosure: Always list every artist contribution from engineers, vocalists, etc. on every project including the investors. Having independent unrelated investors in your work (songs or career) is impressive in the business market place.
Do the business part of being an artist in the recording music industry and research for constant knowledge in this regard.
Don't bother in getting managers or agents unless they have been in the business professionally for many years and have a resume of success to provide before you pay them for their services. Most of those want proof you can earn $s for their future percentages too. One day they come to you when they see the potential earnings your work provides.
Be upfront & honest of the facts you present as they can be verified online & will be in business too. Any dishonesty is not good in the long run as hype is cheap and truth does lasts forever.
Reach out to get into the largest music awards process for songs in your country and in the world like the Grammy's which is based on the merit of the music product and not popularity. Popularity of anything can be made easily by paid marketing hype and thousands can prove that fact. Being judged by music recording professionals in the music recording industry like the Grammy's is the best to judge your created product.
To make steady income in the music recording business is not difficult to obtain if you are flexible and have no ego problems to deal with among those surround you in your job. Music writing and performing is a job like any other craftsmanship service which requires to be paid for what you do. Believe in your work and never make any product exposed to the public that is not the best you can afford to do. First impressions is important in getting any job or in the music business. Try to improve each time you create any music product and stretching your abilities is good too.
Hire professionals and associate with professionals who are full time in the music recording business who will easily share with you their lifetime careers on how to achieve what they have accomplished. Wise to learn from others successes as well as failures.
Always pay attention to the response of your audiences and test market your product with only unrelated people. Do this live to know if it's worth the investment of time & money to record those songs first.
Now Kelly...there is more that I'm sure you know from personal experience. Like myself I'm still learning daily because I don't know it all nor does anyone else in the music recording business no matter what they tell you. Opinions are often based on personal experiences & personal knowledge which is something priceless and learning is the key to any job successes in life.
For many artists it's hard to look at the business aspects as a business first before the lights & fame. Fame & stage lights are nothing to desire as it fades with age but the music you as an artist are an instrument to serve to the world. This will make a career a lifetime of intellectual protected pieces of inheritable product that lasts the test of time. Now since I'm the founder of a consulting business exclusive to the music recording industry I can't tell anyone at CJP-NHRecords about my free advice but I've heard enough of your work to believe there is a future for you in this business.
Keep me in the loop of your work. Maybe you'd like to work an international project with me someday too? Email: cjpnhrecords@yahoo.com if that idea interests you. God bless and I look forward to hearing from you soon, Nikki

Kelly:

Stopped in and was really impressed with such a fantastic sound. Being you're so close, I thought I'd ask if you have access to a studio, and more to the point... Find out if you provide studio vocalist services.

I occasionally have projects that hit my desk which I think you'd be a perfect city for.

Let me know... And keep up the polished work. Sounding great!

Remember there are ways to give access without giving away you songs if you license streaming to a collection service that will count the downloads and pay the copyright holder(s) for them. It's hard for people to give away hard work to everyone when the cost of doing the work comes out of the artists pocket unless it is financed by the record label or investors who supply the funds which often must be repaid. I would hope you consider your work worth as much as a craftsmen carpenter's service in construction where he doesn't build something by request unless there is compensation. I know the songs on Broadjam are streamed down and not for free for the listeners which is a good thing. Free songs are in the public domain and that's if they are not copyright protected anymore or never were. Every country has those laws that protect the songwriters & publishers which the public is learning through the lawsuits especially for illegal downloads against federal laws. Keep making good recorded music product Kelly. Thank you!

Hi Nikki, Thanks for the advice, I'm a little confused, am I doing this, giving my music away for free? as I wasn't sure this is what I signed up for. I totally agree, I'm a self funded singer songwriter, whose songs are all hard work and money thats hard to get these days. I would hate to think people get them for free. Do you have any advice to me in regards to licensing my songs. Am I in the right place with broadjam? Or should I be trying taxi?
