Born in England, Martin Foster was educated at the Conservatoire de Montréal and the Juilliard School. In the 1970s, he was Founding First Violinist of the American String Quartet, winning the Coleman Competition and the Naumburg Award, and performing throughout North America, Europe and Asia. In the 1980s he joined the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and accepted a Professorship at the Université du Québec à Montréal.

He has performed as soloist, and conducted opera and symphonic repertoire with most orchestras in Québec. He has toured Canada from coast to coast in recital and chamber music concerts. Since 2001 he is Concert Master of the McGill Chamber Orchestra.

More recently, he has composed and produced music for film, television and advertising, for such distinguished clients as Crystal Films, Loto-Québec, AXA Insurance and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
