Extremely intimate, moody, and love-lorn singer/pianist...Jeff Buckley meets Brad Mehldau. Twists smoke-filled jazz with classical grace and tweaks it with the raw energy of rock and folk. This is the debut album for 25 year old singer/pianist Paul Fowler. It is an intensely personal performance, as if you're sitting at the bench with him while he works out each tune. Though jazz standards sit aside originals, it's difficult to tell which is whose - his style is so fluid. A song starts out like something you'd hear from Tori Amos and suddenly it's a jazz standard. A classical prelude takes a turn into a blues-inflected chorus. A fast pop number gets colored by peculiar scales from some far-eastern island. With his smooth voice, he'll drop low and then into the stratosphere while improvising intricate lines at the piano. And by the way, he does this all at the same time, there's no over-dubbing on this record whatsoever. If you like real talent and musicianship, this is it in raw form. Not settling for a simple piano and voice record, Fowler and his producer, Grammy nominee, Robbie Parrish, get creative with the production as well. This album is for people who listen carefully. The sound moves around in the speakers, changing color and shape along with the emotional tone of Fowler's performance. At times you'd think there's an orchestra playing because of the depth and richness of their production.
