Can You Hear Me Now

The Can You Hear Me Now album was an effort to break down genre stereotypes by fusing familiar music forms into something fresh yet sonically familiar. Harmonically, you will hear the influence of hard-bop, traditional R&B, and early 20th century chromatic classical music with little splashes of Coltrane, Duke, Brill Building, and even a little Michael Legrand. Lyrically, I wanted to raise the bar on the usual greeting card sentimentality of old-school R&B. I looked for inspiration in the work of the Beat poets, Dylan, Elvis Costello, P-Funk, Cole Porter and Stephen Sondheim. And I've always been a fan of Steely Dan's idea of layering cryptic and subversive lyrics on top of supertight R&B hooks.
