One Horse Town

Story Behind The Song

This song is somewhat autobiographical. I basically grew up in the city, but for a while lived in a very small town in Texas, where I fell head over heels in love with a veterinarian who was born and raised in Atwood, Kansas. She had six in her graduating class. All she could do was talk about how much she loved it there and wants to go back there to live. It didn't work out. After the demise of our incredibly short relationship, I wrote this song, which paints a picture of what might have been .....

Lyrics

ONE HORSE TOWN

Well I?m living with a woman who comes from a one horse town.
They got just one streetlight and a Dairy Queen that?s closed down.
But they got ten churches and a tiny school
with a sign on the front that says, ?Wildcats Rule?
and cornfields everywhere you look for miles around.

But I myself am a Fort Worth, Texas boy.
And civilization is something that I enjoy.
Yeah we got some crime and the traffic?s hell,
but at least we?ve got cable and Taco Bell.
But I?m sitting here living with a woman from a one horse town.

A one horse town, all we do is sit and watch that old grass grow.
A one horse town, all we talk about is rain, hail, ice and snow.
I don?t know what they said to you in that one room school house that you went to
but I?m gonna leave you sittin? in your one horse town.

Well you had me down when you caught me with your country charm.
You said moving to the country won?t do me any harm.
But I was thinking something like Mineral Wells
when you described your home in this Kansas hell
and got me right in the middle of your one horse town.

And I can see the attraction this town holds for you.
You?re a great big fish in a little tiny pool.
Where everything is simple, everything is sweet
but baby my life, it won?t be complete
until I pack up my bags and get out of your one horse town.

So you can get on your tractor or you can come get in my truck.
We can make down to Texas tonight with a little luck.
We can go there fast or we can go there slow
but I?ll go crazy now, don?t you know
If I gotta spend another night in your one horse town.
