Ups and Downs

Story Behind The Song

I have attempted to create a song in the style of noir. Imagine a smoky lounge, filled with hard-boiled and sleazy characters. This song is a study in dysfunctional relationships, which are as old as the human condition. The players are at odds with each other for no apparent reason. It's not black and white, but the extremes of viewpoints tell the tale. One is optimistic and the other is pessimistic. The tragedy of the story is that their love for each other never worked, as their extreme emotions destroyed them both.

Song Description

The singer describes the relationship with her lover, as wackado. It's hot and cold and mostly intense. They're up and down on a constant basis. She regrets her wedding vows and wants to get out of this relationship. She is worried about his mental health, but has concerns for her own well-being. The song ends with the suggestion of a murder, suicide. But, that conclusion will be left up to the listener.

Lyrics

Ups and Downs
(Intro)
I. You're a little crazy. I'm so insane.
In love with you. I'm to blame.
For stayin' here, when you wanna fight.
(Bass line) Oh, no! (Bass line) Oh, no!
II. I'm walkin' on eggshells. I'm on tip-toe.
I don' know which way to go.
To deal with you. When you're wound up tight.
(Bass line) Oh, no! (Bass line) Oh, no!
(Chorus)
Turn it up to th' max. In between your attacks.
Th' silence is so deafening.
Stress is a killer. Our life is a thriller.
Of ups and downs. That's you and me. Ups and downs. That's you and me.
(Turnaround)
III. How'm I gonna get away from you?
I know that I said, "I do."
But, you have changed, from day to night.
(Bass line) Oh, no! (Bass line) Oh, no!
IV. All you talk about is doom and gloom.
Don't blow yo' brains in th' livin' room.
Make such a mess. Couldn't stand th' sight.
(Tag) Ups and downs. That's you and me. Ups and downs. That's you and me. Ups and downs. That's you and me.
(Instrumental ending with vocal tag)

Intro made me think of an old western movie theme, very quality sounds. Good job making the drum samples swing, it's very hard to do jazz music without using live drums. Drums however are placed very well in the mix. Pleasant song all the way down to the long fade. I like the feel of the brush drum set. You utilized your sounds and vibe extraordinarily on this piece, really created an ambiance of mystic, sex appeal and intrigue.
