Our Home Town

Story Behind The Song

This song is my reflection of growing up in a small community. My family lived out on a farm, as did many of the people who attended our school and supported the small businesses.

Song Description

The singer is a country girl from a small town, where the kids get into all kinds of mischief. This strict, God-fearing community, has it's customs and no-no's, but the young'uns find ways to rock it. Many of the adults are corrupt and hypocritical and the young'uns grow up to repeat this cycle.

Lyrics

Our Home Town

I. Me an' Cousin Polly didn't wanna lolly gag around.
Jumped into th' pick-up. Headed for th' truck stop, south a town.
Found th' local boozers. What a bunch a losers, buyin' rounds.
Me an' Polly got drunk. You could say, we got skunked, in our home town.
II. Jumpin' over ditches, like th' Dukes a Hazzard, tomboy pals.
Broke th' axle right there. Drank a lot a cold beer. We're country gals.
Daddy cut allowance. Mama tried to shame us. They struck out.
Preacher tried to save us. Th law was out to get us, in our home town.
(Chorus)
In our home town, you're goin' to heaven or you're hell-bent bound.
It's all black or white. No shades a gray. Can't cross th' track at night.
Sunday bells ring. You say your payers. Protect us with all God's might.
In our home town, us young'uns gonna rock it! This is our home town.
Our home town. Our home town.
(Modulation turnaround)
III. Night a graduation. What a celebration. Grown, at last.
Just a rite a passage, climb th' water tower. Take a chance.
Paint our class motto. Sheriff's incognito, a block around.
When we done th' deed up, spent th' night in lock-up, in our home town.
IV. Daddy went to prison, 'cause he made some moonshine in a still.
Preacher won a Elvis impersonator contest in Nashville.
Sheriff got arrested. Three marriages in Texas. His wives found out.
Elected a new mayor, a young'un did prevail, in our home town.
(Chorus)
In our home town, you're goin' to heaven or you're hell-bent bound.
It's all black or white. No shades a gray. Can't cross th' tracks at night.
Sunday bells ring. You say your prayers. Protect us with all God's might.
In our home town, us young'uns gonna rock it! This is our home town.
Our home town. Our home town.
