Storm of the Century

Story Behind The Song

The song actually tells the story well on it's own. I was changing duty stations in the Army, driving from California into the desert of Arizona, with a beatiful dark haired vixen riding passenger. The sun set fire to the desert as it went down on the horizon, and as the sky grew dark with the coming night, a storm rolled in like I had never seen before. Anyone that's seen a lightning storm in the south west, knows the intensity of this experience. We watched lightning streak across the sky off in the distance we were racing toward. As the storm surrounded us, the charge in the air got the better of us, and our primal impulses took over. It was a force of nature. Much like a storm, when it did subside, and we found ourselves on the otherside of that dark face in the sky, the stars showed clearly and the animals that came out of us withdrew to wherever that place inside each of us is, where they lay sleeping, waiting for the next storm to appear.

Song Description

Aesthetic soundscapes and sinister sounding chord progressions communicate the sexual fireworks of the story being told in metaphor and entendre. Raspy male vocals over guitars, bass, synth, drums and percussion create the shape of a storm as it rolls in and dissipates, but not before lightning strikes as the lead guitar whales through a solo. The length of this song allows the listener to be taken on the adventure, along for the ride.

Lyrics

Storm of the Century

The sun went down,
The air was heavy, my bags were light.
We set out from California on a Tuesday night.
There are no borders in the desert;
No Arizona, no New Mexico.
There?s just a heat
That plays the eye
As it hits the road.
They say twisters need certain circumstances to spin faster,
And I met you,
You were my catalyst for disaster,
Now I?m spinning faster.

Chorus
You were the storm of the century
And your eye drew me slyly in the wind.
But when you stare down the face of a storm like yours
You don?t make it out the same way you made it in.
You gotta give it up because you never thought that
you?d be giving in, yeah.

Your skin
Seemed to glow like amber,
Bourbon whiskey
But you go down
Smooth
Like a burning coal.
It was a bitter sweet poison that I never could afford
But I won?t tell nobody
About the bottle that I stole.
If I?d have known then
What was up ahead
Well I surely would have taken my time,
But I was younger then
And hell bent
And in my prime.

Chorus

I?ve never had a problem
With good-bye, the parting of ways.
I never look for greener grass
When I can just sit down in the middle of a purple haze.
Just when I thought it was over she caught me
Further on up the road.
She said ?I don?t know what you?re looking for, but I can surely help you carry that load.?
And I said, ?Baby, there?s a reason I don?t make promises. When I walk I do my walking alone. And the memory of you might weigh down upon my shoulders, but those memories are the only things I can truly call my own.?

Chorus
