He Didn't Come to Lie in a Manger

Story Behind The Song

As DJ's on the radio were discussing the importance of having the nativity scene on display in public places, one of them commented, "There's more to Jesus than Chrismas morning -- He didn't come to lie in a manger!" I was stunned, grabbed my pen and had the song almost entirely written by the time I got home.

Lyrics

HE DIDN'T COME TO LIE IN A MANGER

Each year we unpack the boxes
Decorate the Christmas Tree
We all reserve a special place
To set the nativity

Mary, Joseph and Jesus
With Shepherds and sheep by their sides
Don't forget the Wise Men
With an Angel placed way up high

Oh how we love to wonder
What it was like on that night
But the true meaning of Christmas
Is what Jesus did with His life

CHORUS:
He didn't come to lie in a manger
He didn't come to stay as a child
He came because He loves you and me
He came to be our sacrifice

2. Every Christmas season
Manger scenes abound
In your house, or in the neighbors yard
Reminders all around

So, each time you see the stable
With the little baby inside
Remember in that manger scene
There's more than meets the eye
(Chorus)

BRIDGE:
The Baby born in Bethlehem
How still we see Thee lie
We were born to follow Him
But He, He was born to die.
(Chorus)
