Story Behind The Song
I was thinking of how many Americans are away from home now, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I thought of the loves many are separated from. I decided an extended metaphor about the presence and steadiness of a great oak tree back home might reflect their sentiments.
Song Description
I?m far away now,
But I thought of how
You might think of me
So being here
Won?t be so hard.
It?s that big oak tree
In your front yard.
My love for you
Is as deep as its roots.
And swells up inside
Of me as wide
As it branches reach
And beyond all my speech.
I long to hold and kiss you
As many times as it has leaves.
And I miss you
As often as they flutter in the breeze.
So, while I?m a-way,
Please think each day
Of that big oak tree and me.

Lyrics
THAT BIG OAK TREE AND ME
By Tom Attea
I?m far away now,
But I thought of how
You might think of me
So being here
Won?t be so hard.
It?s that big oak tree
In your front yard.
My love for you
Is as deep as its roots.
And swells up inside
Of me as wide
As it branches reach
And beyond all my speech.
I long to hold and kiss you
As many times as it has leaves.
And I miss you
As often as they flutter in the breeze.
So, while I?m a-way,
Please think each day
Of that big oak tree and me.
My love is as strong
And will last as long
As that oak has stood and will stand
On your land.
And I will always be
As steady in the wind
As its trunk has been.
And you know I?m only gone
Like its leaves in fall.
My love will bring
Me back to call
On you sure as its leaves
Return in spring;
So, while I?m away,
Please think each day,
Of that big oak tree and me.
And I promise you
The first time
I see you
I will ask if you?ll be mine.
And if you agree,
We will be
Like two birds who live among
The strongest branches of
That big oak tree,
Singing of our love.
And raising our young.
Then, no matter whether
Sun or rain comes our way,
Or how hard the wind drives,
We will be together
All of our lives.
If, while I?m away,
You will think each day
Of that big oak tree and me.
Think of that big oak tree and me.
