Calls You

Story Behind The Song

This song was written while on retreat, a week after September 11th. It seemed like the whole world was recovering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, that we were all survivors of a sort. Over the previous months, I had also been listening to survivors of sexual abuse, and hearing their pain. When I came home from the retreat, this song came forth, as a prayer for all those who are hurting.

Song Description

The song is written as encouragement and a prayer. The narrator asks that the listener "will always be aware" of the presence of Love in their lives, no matter what may happen. There are three verses, with a repeated tag at the end of each verse. Instrumentation is pop, tinged with a bit of folk from the mandolin. Before the final verse, the arrangement quietens, so that Terry's beautifully smooth voice can sing the heart of the prayer: "May you do more than survive the hurts of yesterday, may you see the blessings grow where destruction hoped to play." The song concludes with the joyous affirmation that "love is here to stay, and love calls you by name."

Lyrics

May you know that in your heart
Is all you seek to obtain
May you live each day alive
And not cower for fear of pain
May you have the courage to choose
Truth over gain
May you always be aware
That Love calls you by name
Calls you, calls you
Calls you by name
May you always be aware
That Love calls you by name

May you let your armor crack
To let the light flow through
May you see it streaming out
As well as into you.
May you know that darkness
Can never kill what's true
May you always be aware
That Love is here with you
With you, with you
Love is here, here with you
May you always be aware
That Love is here with you

May you do more than survive
The hurts of yesterday
May you see the blessings grow
Where destruction hoped to play
May you know that you are more
Than what happens on the way
May you always be aware
That Love is here to stay
To stay, to stay
Love is here, here to stay
May you always be aware
May you always be aware
That Love is here
And Love calls you... by name
