In Your Grace

Story Behind The Song

This is a true story about the death of my grandmother. She was in her final stage of cancer, and I lived more than 1,000 miles away from her. I received a call from a family member that she might have about one week left to live. The next day I got in my car and drove all the way from California to Colorado alone, in an attempt to see my grandmother and speak to her one last time before she passed on. The trip took one and a half days, so I spent the first night in a remote town in Utah. I dreamed of my grandmother, and in that dream she healthy and happy and told me that everything was going to be ok. Continuing my journey the next day, I felt - for some reason - a sense of peace and serenity. I didn't make it to Colorado before she died, and I felt guilty, angry and sad about not being there for her in her last moments. But I always believed she knew I was on my way and it was ok for her to go. For a long time after her death, I often dreamt of her. In those dreams, she was always comforting me. It was as if she was helping me to be strong and move on with my life.

Lyrics

I'm racing home to get to you
So many words to say, must I bid you sweet adieu?
I want to hold your hand in mine
And comfort you in your dying time

Daylight turns into cold night
As I drift in darkness, you are guided to the light
We meet in dreams as I hold onto my sleep
Your spirit calms me as my soul begins to weep

You said goodbye and were embraced by mother earth
I feel your strength in me, you are my rebirth
I close my eyes and sense your spirit in this place
I will be protected when you hold me in your grace

You are on a journey to another life
I miss you so much but I know you are all right
Once again you smile, your suffering has gone
What you left me is a love to carry on

You said goodbye and were embraced by mother earth
I feel your strength in me, you are my rebirth
I close my eyes and sense your spirit in this place
I will be protected when you hold me in your grace
