Lyrics

Ghosts

He wakes up early in the morning, sun on his face, another beautiful day in the human-rat?race. The clock says seven but he sets it ahead, a couple of minutes extra just so he can stay in bed. His mind is up and running, already into the day: where to go; what to do; who to see; what to say?
He gets up out of bed, begins his daily routine; an hour of preparation for a day in the machine.
He briefly loses his temper on the way in to work; cut off by some jerk ? spilled hot coffee on his new shirt.
First couple of hours he?s in an awful mood; treats his co-workers rude[ly], gives his boss a lot of attitude? But as the day wears on he slowly gets ahead, and that cute girl down the hall laughed at something he said!
By the time he breaks for lunch his disposition?s improved, his day is quickly getting over and he?s into his daily groove? He?s working extra hard to get things done so when it finally gets to quitting he can clock out and run?
He?ll have to fight a little traffic on the drive back home, he finally bought a decent place and now he lives there alone?
He?ll take a shower, eat some food, watch a little TV ? he?s got money in the bank, a good job, and security.
He?s got a future and some solid ideas, and now it?s time to relax ? he knows what happiness is?
He?s figured out all of the complicated rules to his game, but when he closes his eyes his dreams are always the same? Too many stones left unturned; too many quiet defeats; when he goes to bed at night he?s seeing ghosts in his sleep.

He wakes up late in the afternoon, peels open his eyes, went to bed with the sunrise after staying up all night. He slowly comes to life and looks all around, thinking deeply and gravely about something profound?
He quickly laughs at it all and pulls himself out of bed, finds some clothes on the floor but decides to go naked instead. He doesn?t need any clothes, he?s alone; he?s got his world to himself, and all his time is his own.
He fixes some breakfast then goes out into the world, taking deep breaths of air and admiring the pretty girls.
He likes the movement and the sun on his skin, and when he glances in a pond he sees his father staring up at him.
He spends his day in his thoughts and his dreams, often scared by his own sense of life and mortality.
His needs are simple and they?re easily met: He only works when needs to just to stay out of debt?
And when he feels the indelible urge to move on he?ll simply go somewhere different, somewhere further along.
And at the end of the day, when his strength has diminished, he knows he?s started some new things, got a couple of things finished?
As his mind drifts away to an uneasy rest, he wonders, ?Is it all worth it?? Is he passing his own test?
He?s figured out all of the rules to his game, but when he closes his eyes his dreams are always the same:
Too many bridges he burned; too many answers he seeks; when he goes to bed at night he?s seeing ghosts in his sleep?
