Manhattan Diary

Words & Music by Steve & Sue McConnell

Saturday, September eight, two thousand and one
We visit our friends at their synagogue mid-town Manhattan
Prayers are recited and sacred songs sung
Mothers and daughters, fathers and sons
A holy community, together as one

Sunday, September nine, two thousand and one
Walking through Washington Square, blue skies bright sun
She enjoyed watching the Scrabblers play
And I talked about The Fantasticks all day
And each time we come here, we?re so tempted to stay

And I love my life
A week in the city, just me and my wife
I thank God for the time we?re spending here,
And for the job that returns me each year
I love New York, and I love my life

Monday, September ten, two thousand and one
I?m touring the financial district in lower Manhattan
Here at the towering centers of trade
Where fortunes are lost ? and fortunes are made
Standing down here on the ground, I?m feeling so small

But standing here with me is Mark, he?s got an interesting job
Polish the brass on the fireplugs that jut from the walls
You can see his pride through a job done so well
We?re both unaware of the soon coming hell
so nothing else matters right now, but that glimmering shine

And he loves his life
He?s in the heart of the city with four kids and his wife
He thanks God for the job that brought him here,
And sustained him for so many years
He loves New York, and he loves his life.

Tuesday, September eleven, two thousand and one...

Wednesday, September twelve, two thousand and one
There isn?t a soul on the streets anywhere in Manhattan
And ours is the only car crossing the bridge
No words to describe how surreal it all is
and it?s gonna take years for the tears and the fears to subside

but I love my life
And I?m choosing to live it, without answers, to why
evil sometimes appears to win
In this city that?s like an old friend
I still love New York, and I love this life.
