AfterThought

Story Behind The Song

About changing oneself through total ego self-destruction. You go through trials and tribulations and many individual shifts of personality and circumstance, yet life usually returns first circle. This song is about the hope for a straight line. You want to change your ways for the better, but don't know how. The only way to truly change is through destruction. By the end of the song, the change is achieved, but at what cost? The lyrics can be a bit vague and subtle. The music draws on many styles, namely hard rock, metal, blues. The song has a unique structure, but flows very well and each song "part" can be a song unto itself. There are many layerings and soundscapes within the song, due to a wall of sound created by layers of guitar and subtle piano. The production is intricate, but the song is rather simple. There is a uniform 'theme' guitar part that starts in the beginning and is there throughout. The song feels a lot shorter than it actually is.

Song Description

The song can be viewed as the spiritual war that a man fights between his mind and soul. The themes could very well be portrayed as a real actual war played out on a battlefield. It starts off with a swell of sound and starts quiet like a drop in the water that "drips down to the ocean floor". This part slowly gets louder as the vocals and drums begin. This part is reminiscent of a quiet storm slowly brewing to something bigger. Then there is a big explosion of sounds and loud guitars and the main structure of the song has begun. There are a series of verses and interludes until the first chorus. Following the first chorus is a middle bridge section at which a guitar solo plays (this is the most upbeat portion of the song). Following the bridge, a loud second chorus ensues. After this there is controlled chaos between loud guitars, vocals. This is an angry part. The peaceful, confident and cool parts from the earlier parts of the song have switched into the sound of determined anger and frustration. Finally there is a loud, primal male scream that follows the words "change".

Lyrics

V1:
Hang your soul to dry
Broke by the night
Shift with the moon's tide
Drip down the ocean floor
Mystery grows as days go by
Awake at dusk an afterthought

V2:
This is where the ride goes by
Roads you choose occur to live
Taking form the paint is thin
Living in this skin

Interlude 2:
Take another pill
Take another sip
Fake a brand new lie
I can't be me
truths pass
Floating on the sea
Hold on
I can't be me

Chorus 1
Leave me alone or
Take me along
Afterthought scattered all around

Born in the night
Blinded sight
You are you are Citizen Sky

Chorus 2
Leave me alone or
Take me along
Afterthought scattered all around

Born in the night
Blinded sight
You are you are Citizen Sky

I felt the change
I feel the same

Deep Deep Deep

Change Change Change
