Mermaid's Lament

Story Behind The Song

This story has irked me from the age of five; why did The Little Mermaid have to give up her legs and become human for love? Why couldn't the prince become a merman?

Song Description

This melodic, Celtic-influenced song is based on the fairy tale "The Little Mermaid." After she has gone to the witch, drunk a horrible potion, and gone through agony to become a human, she washes up on the beach only to find that the prince she loves has married someone else.

Lyrics

Ah, ah, ah.

Chorus:
Starfish, octopus, flounders flat
parrotfish, corals, a flock of seabats.
Lost my companions in my ocean home
now my curse is always to roam

Ah, ah, ah.

A cruel prince promised me his heart
Now it's too late to stop what I started
I went to the witch to get these legs
I didn't ask, I practically begged

Chorus

Hidden in a coral cave
I drank the potion, I tried to be brave
Washed up on the rocks to be his bride
Only to see his new queen by his side

Ah, ah, ah.
