It's Not Mexico

Story Behind The Song

I dated a girl who cut her hair off and we broke up. Thus, I considered the Rapunzel story and put my own twist on it. I love old medieval stories and tall tales, but especially like putting my own twist on them. The Jamaican "skank"groove used in the song was a recent addition.

Song Description

Verse one is the guy describing how he went out to get Rapunzel at her tower. He tries to climb her hair but the knights capture him and banish him. The chorus is him asking her to "get her ass down" instead of the traditional story which reads "let down your hair". He says his hometown isn't Mexico. This is a play off the social instability of gang wars and turbulence of present day Mexico. Verse two is the female singing about how hard the male tried to get him, she has some sass in her voice and claims that throughout all his attempts, the knight still kills the squire. At the end of the song, after the guitar solo, the two come together and sing "it took a dash of hope for me to cope with your radiance" in unison, their love finally communal.

Lyrics

At the castle moat's where I left my boat, just sitting there.
And at the top's where I let your drop down all your hair.
I tried to climb each of your braids, casually.
Then silver plated men came to banish me.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Get your ass down.
I wanna take you back, to my home town.
Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Get your ass down.
I wanna take you back, to my home town.
It's not mexico.

It took two fortnights and three swordfights and a ball of fire.
He attempts this grand event only to kill the squire.
You just sit up there, poised in elegance.
It took a dash of hope for me to cope with your radiance.

Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Get your ass down.
I wanna take you back, to my home town.
Rapunzel, Rapunzel. Get your ass down.
I wanna take you back, to my home town.
It's not Mexico.

It took a dash of hope for me to cope with your radiance.
