I Saw Elvis

Story Behind The Song

I grew up in northeast Ark. 40 miles from Memphis. In my part of the country, Elvis was definitely King. Also, Elvis Blue Christmas album, was one of two records we had when I was little. I just felt there was such a sadness about Elvis and I like to think he has found peace.

Song Description

Song about a person in church on Sunday and he has a vision of Elvis singing in the choir. It is sung like a slow stately gospel song with a beautiful Alleluia chorus. He realizes he has had a vision of an Elvis who has finally found peace and because of that vision the protaganist feels more hope for the whole human race.

Lyrics

I SAW ELVIS LAST NIGHT
copyright Scott Aycock

I saw Elvis last night at the church in a long white gown
And he sang like an angel of mercy from Heaven sent down.
And I knew it was Elvis as he sang Allelujah oh what a beautiful sound
And I bowed my head and I said a prayer for that poor boy who's laid in the ground

CHORUS
Allelu..ooh...iah
Allelu..ooh...iah

When I lifted my face, I found not a trace of the King in his long white gown
Was it only a dream or a vision I'd seen of the boy who once lost is now found?
But there was no mistakin' his voice left me shakin' from my head down to..oo my toes
And I knew there was grace for the whole human race as the choir made a joyful sound.

CHORUS-
BREAK

REPEAT CHORUS

I saw Elvis last night at the church in a long white gown.
And he sang like an angel of mercy from heaven sent down.
And I knew it was Elvis as he sang Alleluah, oh what a beautiful sound.
And I bowed my head and I said a prayer for that poor boy who's laid in the ground.

CHORUS- Repeat once
