Carry You

Story Behind The Song

I was watching coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and longed to be able to help, not just financially but spiritually. At telethons I noticed nobody had written a song specifically about it, so I did--and recorded and performed it with my (then) band SASS! In the years since I've sung it many times to audiences afflicted by recent disastrous floods, from Kansas to Iowa to most recently Hurricane Sandy

Song Description

Sung in layered harmonies, a country-folk inspirational anthem of reaching out to those impacted by disaster (originally, flooding from hurricane Katrina but timely whenever a major storm causes catastrophic flooding). Applicable to any Bible-based modern religion (note reference to Psalms) but can be secularly sprititual as well. When I wrote it a bandmate remarked that it would be perfect for the Dixie Chicks (who inexplicably weren't on your "sounds like" list)!

Lyrics

Well, the sun came streaming through the stained glass
And the choir sang a Hallelu
And we rose to pray On that Sabbath day
And we mourned the ones Who didn't make it through.
Then the one on the pulpit stood to guide us
As we sought a quiet holy calm
We could hear that still, small voice inside us
As it sang the spirit of the psalm:
CH:
"I will carry you 'cross the water,
I will shelter you in the storm
I will shield you from The blazing sun
And enfold you when you long to be warm.
When you call on Me I will hear you
And provide a peace profound and true..
Though your soul may ache and your heart may break,
I will carry you, I will carry you."

On the news I watched the waters rising,
Safe beneath my roof intact and dry.
And before my eyes I could recognize
All the agony Of a dream about to die.
Can a psalm satisfy the hungry?
Can a prayer bring back a brighter day?
No, it's time to give all we can offer
And to mean every word as we all say:
CH:
We will carry you 'cross the water.
We will shelter you in the storm.
We will shield you from The blazing sun
And enfold you when You long to be warm.
When you call on us we will hear you
And we'll share a peace profound and true.
Though your souls may ache and your hearts may break,
We will carry you, we will carry you
CODA:
Carry on, for we will carry................ you.
