the church's spires stand listening to the wires
hoping to hear when god makes a call
the river runs beneath the bridge reflecting back the mountain ridge
in its never ending goodbyes to us all

I looked up at you from the morning paper
I could not believe what I was reading
'a woman got 10 lashes for driving a car?'
and you were shaking your head filled with disbelief
seeing goodness crashed up on a reef
saying 'stop this world before it goes that far'

I don't have the answers, I don't have the clues
everyone feels righteous, everybody hates to lose
everybody has a vision of what's right & wrong
and preventing human suffering takes way too long

the roadway construction & its traffic seduction
with cars & their drivers in fractured delays
a flock of birds in congregation look down from the wires in consternation
debating the nature of strange human ways

you turned to me with your eyes in trouble
on the table our financial returns
you said 'so much of our money has gone down the drain'
'but at the very least we still have jobs to go to
and keeping on is all we can do'
