Masterpiece

genre: storytelling hispano-country rock

Mike's got a girlfriend and she's beautiful; he thought his life would be a breeze,
but now she's told him that she's got a major agenda
to make some kind of masterpiece.
She says she can't just hang out at the lake and be a cool, supportive squeeze:
that's fine sometimes but life is meant for more than just that,
she's gotta do this masterpiece.

Now Mike's a real modern guy, and he's got respect ?
he even helps with the chores as much as any man can!
He's for equal rights and he doesn't expect that a real intelligent woman would fake lobotomy for a man
but let's face it, he's an easygoing guy, he does his work but he likes to relax.
He's not going to win the Nobel unless they give one for home brewed wine,
and she says she understands that and she thinks his way is fine
as long as she can grab her own life and get it on the tracks
'cause she's gotta make her move now or the chance will fall
right through the cracks and she'll never get it back.

She's gotta get herself a Ph.D., and who knows how many more degrees.
She'll spend ten hours every day in some laboratory just working on this masterpiece.
She also wants to start a family. Mike said at first this made him freeze,
but with some thought he started thawing out on the subject ?
it's all part of that masterpiece.

Mike tells me now that he's had a life, he's been wild and free,
he waterskis with the best, and he's good on skates;
says he had it so good that it never crossed his mind that for certain kinds of ambitions it was getting a little late.
He says that Karen woke him out of a sleep, and a mighty good sleep it was
but now he's opened his eyes and thinks he could take on a little more.
If he doesn't watch every game, you know the home team will still score
She just might be onto something, she's good at what she does,
even he could get ambitious, in fact it might be quite a satisfying buzz.

I'm shocked but not surprised by all this treason ? romance can bring men to their knees.
How can you tell your drinking buddy that putting down ten is a quite respectable masterpiece?
But you can't miss the fire in his eyes, he knows the goalie's in the crease,
he knows he only has one slapshot at this life and this goal will be his masterpiece ?
he knows he only has one breakaway and it's now and he's jumping for this masterpiece...
and me I'm going back to bed and I hope if I dream, it's not about some crazy ? masterpiece
I don't need no masterpiece ? no damn way.
