Peter J Stein's musical style can be described as "folkstein", a uniquely personal style reminiscent of Bob Dylan, but digitalized and stylized by Paul Simon and Donovan influences. Revived from years of musical and recording exile, Stein, using the studio as his palette, utiliizing his versatility at guitar, keyboards, percussion, and vocal harmonies, moves the listener to new perceptual and emotional heights.

Born at a tender age, I played Jailhouse Rock at age 7, and then suffered for 5 long years on the violin, like the little boy on the Rorschach card. Danny and the Juniors (Schoolboy Romance), Bobby Darin (Dream Lover), Paul Anka (Lonely Boy), Dion Dimucci(Teenager In Love, Windows), The Chiffons (He's So Fine), Lennon/McCartney (Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby), Peter, Paul, and Mary(Stewball, Man of Constant Sorrow, All My Trials), Bob Dylan (Gates of Eden, Visions of Johanna, Sad Eyed Lady (of the lowlands)), Donovan (Celeste, Legend of A Girlchild Linda), Paul Simon (For Emily, Song for the Asking), James Taylor (Fire & Rain), Tom Rush (Child's Song), Richie Havens (Follow), and Jackson Browne (Adam's Song, I thought I Was A Child) were a few of my early heroes. In more recent years, Annie Lennox (Open Door), Jewel (Foolish Games), and Paolo Nutini (Last Request) exemplify my lust for beautiful ballads. The thrill for me, aside from playing live for an audience, resides in the studio, where I can collaborate with the engineer's skills, to achieve control over every sound, instrument, and vocal track, to design a song from the ground up, and aim for the most distant star. The ultimate worth of a good tune, however, is exemplified by the melody, itself, with the lyrics weaving alongside, and, like lovers, they flow in tandem with the accompaniment, to emotionally touch the listener's imagination.
