To The Man

Story Behind The Song

Story of two men. A common family man who lives an honest, modest, basic and happy normal life. On the other hand, the hotshot owner/boss/executive is the opposite. He is wealthy, cold, controlling and not a good family man, but in his high standing position, he is VERY successful. The song explores how many business owners/corporate leaders act so cold and ruthless. They go down a very narcissistic path and become successful. It leads them to thinking that nobody is right but them, both professionally and personally. The story plays out to where the common man gets fired, or fucked by the boss. The story actually is based on a situation my father was in where he worked for a guy for 20 years, but then was just 'let go' without a retirement plan or severence pay. The common man has to go home to his family early one day and explain that he is out of a job. It is VERY stressful for the common man. The wife and kids are worried because money will be tight and things will be a struggle. I ask why I can?t fight for what has been taken from me. You'll notice in the background that the part of wife is vocally performed where she says, "hon, why are you home, why are you home, today." The visual here is that the kids are confused, too, as to why their father has come home early that day. But, the boss, as always, is able to also put himself in a position where he?ll win and profit and be immune from any negative consequences because he is 'the man.' Thus, "To The Man."

Lyrics

?To The Man?

Written by: Jeff Karczewski, Paul Adams

(Intro)
To- the man- who has- it all-
(yeah)
(hon-, why are you home? why are you home-? today?)
To- the man-

(Verse 1)
I?ll- never show the pain-
My kids wonder- why-
Money does not drive me-
But you- let it consume you-
And you care about the bank more than your family
I feel- for you-

(Chorus)
Why- can?t I fight for what I want from you, want from you
Well what do ya know-, it?s like-, it?s like-, I can?t see-, I can?t see- (I can?t see-)
Why- can?t I fight for what you took from me-, took from me-
Well what do ya know-, it?s like-, it?s like- I can?t see-, I can?t see- (I can?t see-)

(Verse 2 Intro)
(yeah)
(hon-, why are you home? why are you home- today?)
To- the man-

(Verse 2)
You- haven?t seen your wife-
And kids know that- you- lie-
Thinking you?re invincible-
Your mind- is on the next deal-
You?ll die soon but still fuck the people
Who made- you king-

(Chorus)

(Bridge)
Whoa- oh- oh- I?m back-
Back on my feet
And you?ve got your
Million dollars more-
I don?t care-
My family?s strong...family?s strong
But at the end of the day-
I?m fired- again-
(To- the man- who has- it all-, never- is- to blame-)
To- the man- who has - it all-, never- is- to blame-

(Chorus)

(Outro)
(yeah)
(hon-, why are you home? why are you home- today?)
To- the man-
