Story Behind The Song
"Every Now and Then" is an autobiographical song that describes the writer's personal struggles with his pride. When things go well, he allows his sense of pride to create the illusion that he can accomplish anything without help from anyone in general and God in particular. It is only when things start to go bad that he finally realizes that he needs to seek guidance and help from others and from God. Unfortunately, this is a lesson that has to be relearned on a regular basis.
Song Description
Pride is a difficult challege to overcome. "Every Now and Then" is a reminder that success leads us to believe that we don't need any help - that we can control everything in our lives. Until things go wrong and we suddenly become desparate for the help we once refused.

Lyrics
Chorus:
Every now and then I think I can make it on my own
Every now and then I think I can climb this mountain all alone
Every now and then I think I can find my own way home
Every now and then
Every now and then
Verse 1:
I'm gonna change the world today, and I don't have too much to time
Got my own master plan, so everybody fall in line
Don't worry about the future, the past don't mean a thing
Don't learn from my mistakes, so I just make them once again
Verse 2:
Don't think I'll ever learn, that I can't make it on my own
Things always get so turned around, when I'm out there all alone
The world starts closing in, I dig a deeper hole
Don't need no help from anyone, my pride still has control
Bridge:
I've got the whole thing figured out, if I need your help I'll call
And when my plans all fall apart, maybe on my knees I'll fall
And then I'll find the time to pray, every now and then
