Story Behind The Song
There is no story behind this song... this was just a good story I had in my head and had to get out.

The first verse is about the blissful love of a couple and the grat times they had. In the end, she still said goodbye. The third verse, a son watches as his father leaves their family. In the end, the cycle continues when the character this has all happened too says goodbye to a love.

Lyrics
Goodbye
Long ago in a far off land, across the sea and over the moon,
Lived this girl, her name was Anne. She fell in love with me way to soon.
She had long dark hair and eyes of blue, she stole my heart with love so true.
I don?t recall her last name, but I guess to her it was all the same.
We ran through the countryside, through the meadows and the hills?
Down to the cool waterfalls where we swam and had our thrills.
Then she kissed my lips and she said with a sigh,
?Darlin? I gotta leave you. So long and goodbye.?
She said Goodbye?.
There was this man in my hometown who had a plan to get around.
And see the world, maybe even outer space, he never felt at home in this place.
So then he packed hi bags and he went for a walk.
I last saw him down by the river dock.
He said, ?Son, I must go and please don?t you cry
When I tell you mom I gotta leave her. So long and goodbye.?
He said goodbye?
Now I must go and keep on keepin? on
Down the road a-movin? on, if it ain?t right you know it?s wrong.
So dry your tears now baby and please don?t you cry
When I say I gotta leave you, so long and goodbye?
I said goodbye?
