Story Behind The Song
I was going to sing the song at my mom's 70th birthday. Then I saw a Taxi listing for a Mother's Day song and that gave me the idea to record it. I made copies give out at her birthday to all her friends and family. Thanks for the idea, Taxi!!!
Song Description
I wrote this song the year after I left home when I was 17. It recalls happy childhood memories, the poignancy of leaving home and a promise to stay close in the future.

Lyrics
MOTHER
(Words & Music by Nomi Yah)
Verse 1
Mother, I can still see you laughing
Underneath the redwood tree
I see you laughing with me
Over many miles I can see
Mother, I can still hear you playing
Such a simple melody
I hear you playing easily
Over many miles I perceive
Hear your song in the meadow
Smell your coconut oil
Touch your tiny music hands
Watch you planting the soil
Verse 2
Mother, I can still see you smiling
As I show you my diploma
Though you know I?m gonna roam away
And you return to home
Mother, I can still see you crying
In the airport as I leave
I see you wave goodbye to me
Over many years I can see
But you still sing in the meadow
Rub your coconut oil
Over tiny music hands
And watch the plants in the soil
Bridge
Mother, I know that I?ve been bad
So many times I?ve made you sad
But think of the love that we have had
Mother, I know you?ll understand
When I reach across years and take your hand
As time goes on and turns to sand
Verse 3
Mother, we have had something special
And it cannot ever die
As long as you and I will try
And as the years go spinning by
Mother, I can?t tell you enough
The things I want to tell to you
I think you?ll know it is true
When I say ?I love you?
Love your song in the meadow
Love your coconut oil
Love your tiny music hands
Love will grow in our soil
